Gambler’s Ruin
Observing the 2% Rule mentioned above practically ensures that you will never lose your entire blackjack-playing bankroll. Only those players who place wagers in excess of 2% or play in games where they do not enjoy an advantage will likely experience the gut-wrenching agony of “gambler’s ruin,” i.e., losing all of their gambling money.
On the following graph, note your approximate chances in percent of experiencing gambler’s ruin as opposed to doubling your bankroll, according to the number of betting units and the odds advantages offered in some common games played:
Chance Of Experiencing Gambler’s Ruin
1. The most efficient computer-generated Blackjack counting system using a 1-8 bet range (not humanly possible under casino conditions), + 4% advantage.
2. High-low MBS-2 with 1-4 bet range (described in chapters 6 and 7), which has a playing efficiency of about + 2.7%.
3. Blackjack’s BS alone (single deck, no counting), +.01%.
4. Craps, -1.4%.
5. Roulette, -5.26%.
